When the tension builds, what do you do to relax?

I admit, I'm bad at relaxation. Thoughts race through my mind and no matter how hard I try I can't picture pretty clouds or a warm beach or any of the other things the relaxation tapes suggest.

One thing that does help me is massage. I have a great massage therapist that I try to see every other week (well, more realistically at least once a month).

What do you all do to relax?

I have a really hard time relaxing. It seems when I try to relax my mind starts working. The best thing I find is to read. It takes me into a whole other world.

I love reading, too. It's very rare that I'm too tense to read, but it *has* happened.

Stretching helps me relax.  The Chi Kung exercises I do daily help overall.  I find myself reacting very differently to the things that cause tension.

I go and sit by myself by our garden pond. We have two waterfalls there and the sound just takes my stress away.

We have a small waterfall as well behind our backyard and sometimes I just spend few moments and meditate there. Smile

It's lovely, isn't it? The only problem that I have had with it is once we get a little further into summer it will be difficult to go there at night without getting eating alive.

A day in the Northwoods is about as close to complete peace and serenity that I can find myself. Whether it be any season, sitting in a forest of maple glancing at the beauty of a blanket of stars, the crisp air of the forest, and the sounds as the forest comes alive in the twilight. I think it helps me to realize that we are blessed with a certain beauty that cannot be taken for granted.

I am terribly stressed all the time and always feel pulled in all directions.
While problems for me won't go away until some bills are paid off and my car gets repaired, some things I do to calm down are to make a list of need-to-do's so I don't have to think about them, drink tea or warm milk, read a book or watch a movie.
I would love to take a vacation but being too far away from home would only make me worry about things more!

This is where my 'always-being-tired' helps a lot.  My memory can only work so well when I'm tired and I don't always remember things that stress me out.  However, I do tend to nap when I'm stressed or I pay attention to one of my animals.  A good hug from one of your children can help a lot too.  I just tell one of them that I need a good hug and either of my girls are ready and willing!

I've finally learned to let that go!  Every year we make it a point to go camping at least once.  It took many years before I learned to stop worrying and enjoy the few days of peace and fun in the mountains.

I love to find a quiet corner and read a good book. Or a nice hot bath will sometimes relax me also. I don't get alot of alone time when I do either of these things though.
