Nothing against cigarette smokers, but I do notice if I've spent the night in a smoky room, like a bar, my eyes tend to be puffy the next day. I think it's because the smoke irritates my eyes and then I rub them.

That sounds like a good hypothesis, Calypso. While I don't get dark circles, smoke irritates my eyes as well, especially when I'm wearing contacts. At most my eyes get dry and the lids get puffy.

My eyes actually swell and my eyelids become huge and swollen if I am near smoke. When the swelling finally goes down, I have horrible dark circles. Usually though it takes 2-3 days for the swelling goes down.

Seems that you are allergic to that smoke. Try to take vitamin c as it helps to fight with such allergies. Dont rub when you get irritated...Try to wash your eyes with cold water or have a wet kerchief with you and give a gentle massage to your eyes. Hope this helps you to reduce the irritation.

I have a guy at work that constantly smokes cigars, hes also got horrible undereye circles, I recently found out that hes also got allergies. Theres definitely a correlation between smoking and being allergic, it makes the circles a lot worse.

I'll have to keep my eyes open and see if the smokers I know have constant dark circles. Wonder if the smoke effects them the way it effects non smokers.

the reason i belive that this happens is that when you are in a smoky room you tend to rub you eyes which causes a small bursting of the blood vessels around them giving you dark circles under your eyes

I know that any excessive rubbing of your eyes will cause irritation and dark circles. Normally the body will absorb the dead blood cells and the capillaries will shrink within a few days thereby alleviating the dark circles. You might want to make a note of any time that your eyes are itching or irritated and see what is around you. There may be some things around your home or work that aren't helping any. If for no other reason it never hurts to be aware of what your body is telling you. |

Mine would too. Also, smoking causes major wrinkles and aging! If you look at a 40 year old smoker versus a non-smoker, Oh Boy can you tell the difference. I know my eyes are majorly swollen and puffy after being exposed to smoke.

The worst thing in the world you can do is rub your eyes. If your eyes are burning or itching the best thing to do is blink, moisture is the key really.

smoking depletes the oxygen in your body, so there is going to be a desire to rub your eyes, due to lack of moisture. Also, the puffiness would probably lead to that desire to rub your eyes. Inevitably, the dark circles caused by lack of oxygen might be a theory? Who knows.

I have never noticed this in smokers. I have noticed that smoke filled rooms will dry my eyes out but I have never myself noticed any black circles under the eyes because of it.

I can see where smoking could be a cause. Tobacco is a stimulant and, after too much your body will naturally be tired. This can then cause you to feel tired, look tired and have dark circles. The oxygen theory is a good one too...I might have to research this one!

For what it is worth, I am told my grandmother had very dark circles until she stopped smoking, and they cleared up almost immediatly (of course after some severe instant health issues forced this). If that isnt incentive to stop smoking, I dont know what is. But I think circulation affected by smoke can add or create the problems.
